My Mother's Islands
Synopsis
Islands of the Gulf was New Zealand's first locally made documentary for television; broadcast in 1964, the series of five half hour programmes eloquently told the story of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf.
That series was written, presented and produced by Shirley Maddock. Fifty four years later, Islands of the Gulf has been remade and, in a lovely piece of symmetry, it's hosted by Elisabeth Easther, Shirley Maddock's daughter. Elisabeth is “a daughter on a mission” - retracing her mother's journey around the islands and aiming to discover how things have changed in the intervening years.
